Where five sacred rivers are said to meet — a ghat rich in history, from the saint Ramananda to the Alamgir Mosque above its steps.
Panchganga Ghat is named after the five rivers believed to meet here — the Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, Kirana and Dhutapapa. Only the Ganga can be seen today — the other four live on in faith and in the ghat's name.
Panchganga has a special place in the bhakti movement. The saint Ramananda taught on these steps, and legend says the young weaver-poet Kabir received his first spiritual teaching here. Tulsidas, too, spent time at Panchganga and praised Bindu Madhava, the form of Vishnu long worshipped at this ghat.
The skyline above the ghat is dominated by the Alamgir Mosque, raised in the 17th century under Aurangzeb on the site of the earlier Bindu Madhava temple. From a boat it is one of the easiest landmarks to spot on the northern riverfront.
Panchganga is north of Manikarnika, beyond the standard 50 ghats route. Choose the All 84 Ghats option (+₹1,000) or board at Namo Ghat — see the 84 ghats boat tour.
