The red sandstone fort of the Maharajas of Banaras, on the eastern bank of the Ganga facing Tulsi Ghat.
Across the river from Tulsi Ghat rises Ramnagar Fort, the seat of the Kashi Naresh — the Maharajas of Banaras. Maharaja Balwant Singh raised it in 1750 from warm-coloured sandstone, and its gateways, arches and riverside walls still feel grand from the water. The royal family remains closely tied to the fort today.
Inside, the Saraswati Bhawan museum is a window into royal life in old Banaras. Expect a mix of the grand and the curious: old motor cars, ceremonial palanquins, elephant howdahs, weapons, clothing and a collection of rare manuscripts and clocks.
The fort and museum are generally open from about 10 AM to 5 PM. A small ticket is charged for the museum. Timings and fees can change, so confirm locally before you go.
Ramnagar is famous for its month-long traditional Ramlila, held around Dussehra, which draws pilgrims and visitors every year.
Most visitors reach the fort by road. Pair it with a sunrise boat ride from Tulsi or Assi Ghat — the fort is across the river from there — and add it to your 2-day itinerary.
