Shivala Ghat lies on the southern stretch of the riverfront, between Assi Ghat and Kedar Ghat. Right beside it stands the Chet Singh fort and ghat — the red-stone palace where Raja Chet Singh of Banaras faced the forces of Warren Hastings in 1781 — one of the most striking buildings on the river.
Shivala is less crowded than Assi or Dashashwamedh, so boarding is relaxed, and it's well placed for both directions: a few minutes south to Assi for the sunrise, or north past Kedar Ghat to Dashashwamedh for the evening Ganga Aarti boat ride.
