Most of the year, boats run every day in Varanasi. During heavy monsoon rains, the Ganga can rise above its warning level; when that happens, the district administration suspends boat operations as a safety measure until the water drops.
Which Months Are Affected?
Floods usually come between July and September, peaking in August and early September. Not every day in these months is affected — boats often run normally in early July and late September. The rest of the year (October to June) boats run as usual.
What Happens When Boats Are Suspended?
All boat rides — private and shared — stop until the administration lifts the order.
The Ganga Aarti continues, but may move to higher steps or rooftops when the lower ghats are under water.
Some ghats and the walk between them may be closed.
